O2M/02Q Common faults
Here at The Gearbox Centre we strive for perfection, so if a job is worth doing then it’s worth doing well. The 02M/02Q Gearbox’s have evolved over the years but not without their own “common faults”. When one of these units is in for a repair not only do we rectify the main issues concerning that particular unit, we also modify them by carrying out precautionary repairs that are known future faults. One of the biggest failings of these gearboxes is the rear input shaft bearing, the bearing itself starts to seize up when it is badly worn causing the outer of the bearing to spin in the gearbox casing. Due to a design fault the whole bearing is then able to spin and machines its way into the aluminium casing which causes excessive input shaft float movement and clutch clearance issues. This fault is rectified in house by replacing the bearing by using steel spacers to return the casings and the bearing pre-load settings to within factory tolerances thus preventing the bearing from wearing the cases in future. Another common fault with this Gearbox is on some units the gear selector shafts are joined to their pick-ups using a rivet system, these can snap causing failed gear selection resulting in no drive. When carrying out work on these units we always replace the rivets regardless of condition at the time with modified high tensile steel nuts and bolts, which also prevents this issue from arising in the future. Lastly we have noticed that in the differential system these units have a cross pin that holds the planet gears in place which is secured using a rolled pin that can snap. This causes the cross pin to come adrift which can lead to extreme damage and an irreparable gearbox. Not only do we replace the rolled pin with a more substantial replacement but we also modify the diff carrier to ensure the maximum effect of our new improved repair. Our success rate at preventing future failings in these units is unparalleled and we find that our customers are very happy to hear that not only are we repairing their gearbox, that we are also saving them money and time on future repairs. |
